Thoughts from within - Woody Harrelson - voiceyourself.com

The poem:
http://www.voiceyourself.com/03_thoughtsfromwithin/03_poem.php

The movie:
http://www.voiceyourself.com/03_thoughtsfromwithin/03_movie.php

THOUGHTS FROM WITHIN

I sometimes feel like an alien creature

for which there is no earthly explanation

Sure I have human form

walking erect and opposing digits,

but my mind is upside down.

I feel like a run-on sentence

in a punctuation crazy world.

and I see the world around me

like a mad collective dream.

An endless stream of people

move like ants from the freeway

cell phones, pc's, and digital displays

"In Money We Trust,"

we'll find happiness

the prevailing attitude;

like a genetically modified irradiated Big Mac

is somehow symbolic of food.

Morality is legislated

prisons over-populated

religion is incorporated

the profit-motive has permeated all activity

we pay our government to let us park on the street

And war is the biggest money-maker of all

we all know missile envy only comes from being small.

Politicians and prostitutes

are comfortable together

I wonder if they talk about the strange change in the weather.

This government was founded by, of, and for the people

but everybody feels it

like a giant open sore

they don't represent us anymore

And blaming the President for the country's woes

is like yelling at a puppet

for the way it sings

Who's the man behind the curtain pulling the strings?

A billion people sitting watching their TV

in the room that they call living

but as for me

I see living as loving

and since there is no loving room

I sit on the grass under a tree

dreaming of the way things used to be

Pre-Industrial Revolution

which of course is before the rivers and oceans, and skies were polluted

before Parkinson's, and mad cows

and all the convoluted cacophony of bad ideas

like skyscrapers, and tree paper, and earth rapers

like Monsanto and Dupont had their way

as they continue to today.

This was Pre-us

back when the buffalo roamed

and the Indian's home

was the forest, and God was nature

and heaven was here and now

Can you imagine clean water, food, and air

living in community with animals and people who care?

Do you dare to feel responsible for every dollar you lay down

are you going to make the rich man richer

or are you going to stand your ground

You say you want a revolution

a communal evolution

to be a part of the solution

maybe I'll be seeing you around.

Vote for America- A write in vote

No I am not saying vote republican and I am not saying vote democrat, heck I'm not even saying vote for Nader. Unfortunately to vote for America we will need to write in our candidate. We know the big two parties are liars and showmen, corporate mouth pieces. Yeah Nader is a visionary, but before we can choose a visionary we need to see clearly, and the only way to make the obvious obvious (to the media and people that would rather be blind) is to show that the system does not work.
What would happen if the majority of the people voted for a write in? Who would get the electorial college votes? Americans would finally get to see our leaders, finally have to tell us that we don't really get to make the discison as they scramble to pass laws and make judgements to keep the old gang going. That is when we can say no! We the people have the power and we have spoken! Change it now!
1) No career politicans. Heck, what about no pay and no property for those that have the desire to make the world better...anyone ever read Plato's Utophia? Philosopher Kings were not politians.
2) If education is so important..make it free..make it co-operative..make it happen..not for a time in peoples' lifes but continously.
3) No more lobbists not done in town halls
--just a start

Beyond talking ...

Over on the "wassup" thread Gilton says something important.

"But I do wish there were a way for guys who are countries away to work in a group and do something commercial and split the spoils. I know we are going to be doing this in the future, I just don't know when."

I think it's not a question of when, but how. The truth is, we all intuit something like this might be possible. But no-one actually knows how to do it. I think there are several issues.

1) People who are attracted to this are, by temperament, bigger on long term thinking / day-dreaming than actual practicalities.
(Let's admit this ... and I definitely include myself.) After all, the nice thing about the vision is that you should be able to do just the "hanging out online chatting when you feel like it" stuff and it should *still* count as work.

2) The infrastructure isn't quite there yet.

3) No one actually has good business models.

So, this thread is for trying to solve these problems and brainstorming how a bunch of people, on separate countries, who don't really know each other that well, and who are mainly not too focussed on practical stuff, can work together to earn money.

We need answers to the following practical questions :

* how to turn our weaknesses into strengths.

* what pieces of the infrastructure are missing? (I mean, we can presumably all get a paypal account, and collect money that way. But what else is missing?)

* how to build trust

* what business needs a swarm of flaky visionaries? And how do you convince customers that they do?

My suggestion on http://www.tribe.net/tribe/servlet/template/pub%2Ctribes%2CViewThread.vm?threadid=cc4f415a-eee2-4eda-a6fd-9190082c480c&tribeid=53971c4b-f6e8-4fce-b7d5-6f6878557eb3
was one attempt to solve the problem. But it didn't seem to get people's enthusiasm. Maybe it seemed too much commitment and there was still the "who do we trust with the money" thing. And, of course, the cost / benefit ratio wasn't that good. Or maybe it was just lack of a good theme.

So other suggestions, thoughts?

Could someone please develop a software to simulate how congress and the senate work so that instead of electing representitives once every couple of years and getting fustrated b/c they lie to us during campaigns anyways, every person could participate in descision making from their desktop. Sure not everyone has a computer, but I bet we could buy one for everybody if we didn't have to pay for representitives.

Here's the deal :

Client companies get to keep maximum 98.9 percent of the value.

The Worthy Cause receives 1 percent.

Client companies are rated and suggested by the client customers.

Worthy Causes are constantly rated, suggested and voted by the client company customers.

The Glocal Conversation Tribe gathers and provides intermediation services,
including rating mechanisms, and providing the list of possible worthy causes from which to choose.

An experiment ...

I'm wondering how a bunch of people who don't really know each other, are self-selecting, and with an indeterminate set of skills, can build trust and work together on a commercial project.

One thing strikes me as a possible low-commitment experiment : group blogging for dollars.

Here's how it would work :

* Start a group blog with a small number of contibutors.

* Put a Google Ad-words bar down the side.

* All members contribute links and stories

* Collect money for ads, and distribute it among members

Important points :

- No one is going to get rich. If it works out, there'll be a couple of dollars a month, max, for the contributors. If it doesn't, there'll be nothing.

- Your membership and right to participate depend on a minimum contribution. (Maybe 1 story + 3 quick links per week. If you don't meet this minimum you forfit your share of the money. Harsh, but easier than some kind of performance related scheme)

- There has to be a benign dictator. Someone who "owns" the blog and Ad-account, who takes responsibility for counting the contributions, collecting the money and forwarding it to the others. (Probably via PayPal)

- Some of the money can be donated to good causes, as the GC "pitch" suggests. But the precise constitutional details can be decided by the group members.

- Why should we be willing to trust this dictator? At first, we're just taking a bet. But the commitment and money will be so small that we can afford to take the risk - ie. contributing 4-5 stories and 12-15 links per month isn't a huge commitment (especially for regular Tribe posters :-), and the danger of losing up to 20 dollars probably isn't too offputting.

- Over a period of time, the group will probably shake itself out into those most commited to the theme and style of the blog, and the community. From there on in, they can probably plan other group projects. For example, maybe co-writing an eBook for sale through Amazon, co-writing software etc.

- Probably the ideal size for the group is between 5 and 10 contributors. (Above that, accounting gets more complex, and the dividend gets very small). If there are more people interested, they can divide among several blogs.

- These are probably not going to be personal and wide-ranging blogs. They should be focussed on a tighter, more ad friendly theme. So this is real "work".

OK, what do people think of this idea? Is anyone up for trying it? Anyone want to volunteer to be the benign dictator? Any good ideas for blog themes? (I'm a bit reluctant for Glocal Conversation or "new ways of doing business" itself to be the theme because these are already widely discussed at the moment, and not, I think, particularly ad-friendly.)

Here I'd like us to brainstorm on possible 95 theses for the emerging glocal conversation.

It would be very cool if even these would be up for grabs, continually revising, and improving it as a living document.

Eventually, we have to reach consensus on how
we want to guide the growth of this.

Personally, I´m fairly agnostic when it comes to governance,
however, when this takes off, some sort of
moderation is possibly called for.

Let me know what you think.

Trying to make sense of this

To do what I think you guys are talking about doing, I am picturing a P2P network with several elements.

People- People can post projects and attempt to find people to do the work they want done. People can attempt to find projects that need their skills. People have profiles. People have friends and friends of friends. People have reputations. People can be mobile and have their locations be known to their friend networks as well as those in their projects should they choose.

Profiles/Searching- People can list their skills, experience, portfolios, resumes, references etc. Skill lists, location, years experience etc can be standardized and searched. People rate those they work with/for after project completion.

Projects- Projects are like tribes. Those who aren't members of the project see only the initial listing, its task breakdown i.e. different parts of the project and skills needed to complete it, those currently involved, and postitions open. For those working on the project, project membership allows file-sharing, discussion boards, chatrooms, etc. Projects can pay in government currency, gifts, status, love, whatever. It is negotiated betweem the person who initially creates the project and those who agree to join it.

Sorry if this is useless/obvious/stupid. It just helps me to get my head around things if I can map them out. I have just been trying to understand how a Glocal Conversation might work. Is this the sort of thing you have in mind?

Still do not understand

Hi.
I have just joined this tribe because it seems interesting that after reading all the posts - I still do not understand...
The terms used seem to contain metaphors which pass me by... What do you mean by, for example, "glocal", "conversation", and "citizenship"?
What are the rules that you are talking about? Why are you talking about rules?

What I think I understood is a notion for a system where people have a direct access to every element it is made of. A kind of unity between "descision making elements" and outcome/s. In a sense, it is like making a picture which is to show of the elements it is made of... Just like a truditional 20th century art... Is that it? If it is, the story of art shows us that it does not work. It simply makes for a different show and keeps being a kind of decoration.. (i.e. the relationship between method and content is simply taken to a different level - but the game is still the same...)
I do think that method and content are essentialy one unit, but this can only come out once the medium is the thing to make.. i.e. elements which are symoultaniously content and method by their nature and therefor allow direct participation within each of their parts, and as a whole.
In this context, something like expertweb, is initself the company, if you want to do something by different rules, its just a different company. If you want to make something which *is* different, the whole approach should be like a new medium...

Pulling it together

I like the sound of Glocal Conversation. But I get the feeling I've heard it before. That's because I think there are several groups thinking about this kind of stuff. Clearly, a lot of people want it. But some of them seem to have been talking about it for a long time without much happening. So there are obviously forces pulling against it, too.

I'm not trying to criticise. What I want, is to see how we can pull together the different groups who have similar ideas and take them forwards.
I'm trying to map the various groups here :

http://www.synaesmedia.com/wiki/wiki.cgi?AlternativesToCompanies

If you know any more, I'd welcome suggestions, here in this discussion group and on the wiki page.

Then I'd be interested if anyone has any thoughts about what these have in common, the differences, whether they can be brought together.

Then I have some questions :

1) What do we really want that's different from being independent sub-contractors using Monster.com or Guru.com?

2) What do we really want that's different from hoping to find a job through generic social networking services like Tribe / Ryze / LinkedIn etc?

Charter

first draft of the Glocal Conversation Charter :

Inclusivity : The Glocal Conversation is and will always be open to all individuals, firms, or organizations that are dedicated to the Purpose and Principles and which they manifest in conducting their organization's activities.

Net Effect : Additional rules can be implemented only to enable the glocal pursuit of fun and happiness, the overarching guideline will be a consensus agreement of net emergent effect.

Participatory Government : The Glocal Conversation will be governed by those citizens that are dedicated to its purpose and principles.

Participatory Ownership : The Glocal Conversation Citizens have full ownership of the self-generated projects or relational activities of the networks in which they participate.

Appreciation and Capability : The Glocal Conversation will be characterized by Appreciation and Capability building. All affairs conducted by the citizens will be in accordance with the search for the best in people, their organizations, and the relevant world around them. The two overarching guidelines involves firstly, systematic discovery of what gives life to a living system when it is most alive, most effective, and most constructively capable in economic, ecological, and human terms,
and secondly, as much freedom as possible for all citizens to pursue fun and happiness within that system.

Distributive : There is no one, singular Centre for The Glocal Conversation. Every citizen and their pursuit, business or practice is the Centre. The Glocal Conversation is an alignment of wholes - not parts or peripheries. Citizens not only represent The Glocal Conversation, they are The Glocal onversation. They are, each in their own right, contributing nodes, centres and links of Glocal Conversation practice, thought and affairs in pursuit of fun and happiness.

Self-Organizing : The Glocal Conversation grows through each citizens initiative and relationships. The Glocal Conversation as a whole emerges and is managed at the most local level possible through conversation, joint meaning making and co-creation.

Diversity : The Glocal Conversation is designed to inspire innovation and experimentation. Rich collaboration can occur, and alternative or even opposite strategies can be pursued simultaneously. Multiplicity abounds. Good ideas are appreciated, and spread rapidly, and those that are not so good will simply dissipate for lack of sponsorship or attention.

Sustainability : The Glocal Conversation is guided by economic, ecologic and sentient sustainability, as envisioned, known and practiced by the citizens.

Conviviality : The Glocal Conversation shall provide two mutually enriching marketplaces, one marketplace, an agora where citizens can meet and conduct all affairs necessary for their pursuit of fun and happiness, and another marketplace, a marketplace of glocal ideas, where tools for conviviality can be developed, produced and exchanged.

Emergence and Endurance : The Glocal Conversation shall pursue its own internal affairs so as to maintain a dynamic living balance of emergence and endurance.
