Eventually, we have to reach consensus on how
we want to guide the growth of this.
Personally, I´m fairly agnostic when it comes to governance,
however, when this takes off, some sort of
moderation is possibly called for.
Let me know what you think.

Re: Governance and moderation
Sat, November 15, 2003 - 9:53 AMYou take the crown, John. I'll stand shady in the corner, trenchcoat-bound, discreetly smoking cigarettes and listening attentively.
And by this I mean, it seems far too early to even speculate. ;-) -

Re: Governance and moderation
Sun, November 16, 2003 - 6:00 PMJust to be clear, I wasn't not asking for governance for it's own sake.
As I said in the other thread. If GC is more than a place we shoot the breeze occasionally (and there are many rival tribes for that) then it needs some kind of reason for *this* group to be together.
One way this group can have "value" is if it has some standards of behaviour. And having standards of behaviour depends on some mechanism to ensure that people who claim to have those standards actually do. Moderation by a trusted leader is *one* way. There are many others : a member rating or voting system, some kind of recommendation system.
None of this is important if GC isn't trying to find a form of value in this particular group of people. If that isn't the point, then moderation is irrelevant.

Re: Governance and moderation
Sun, November 16, 2003 - 8:05 PMI agree with Phil, and do believe that we are finding value in this group of people. Currently, that value consists of interest in creating a situation whereby the GC can occur and the resulting work we are willing to put in to make that happen.
An E-Bay style reputation system makes sense to me for a P2P network. If you don't perform well, people will be less likely to work with you again in the future. For egregious abuses, there are administrators who simply remove you from the organization. This makes sense for future work. Once the GC is up and going. For now, more benevolent dicating from John combined with an attitude towards reaching consensus should be sufficient.
It still does seem early in the game, however it will remain this way as long as we sit around thinking it is still too early to make these kinds of decisions.
